Five women sustained injuries in acid attacks in three separate incidents in Bogra and Sylhet in last week.

Our Bogra correspondent reports that Beauty Bewa, 40, and her young daughter, who hailed from Sarotia village under Gabtoli upazila, were injured critically after local criminals threw acid on them on Sunday night.

Shamima Khatun, an NGO worker, said the family members of Beauty had filed a case against some local criminals who threw acid on her son following a dispute over land in 2008.

The accused in the case gave repeated threats on Beauty, a widow, to withdraw the case but failed.

On Sunday last, the accused set fire to the house of Beauty and at one stage they threw acid on Beauty and her daughter Mithila Farhana Mou, 18, leaving them critically injured and fled the scene.

Neighbours rescued the victims and admitted them to local health complex.

No case has been filed yet.

In another incident, Rokeya Parvin of Shimabari village under Sherpur upazila, and Romena, 22, of Tehori village under Shibgang upazila, were injured in an acid attack on September 17.

Our Sylhet correspondent adds: An 18-year-old girl was admitted to Beanibazar Upazila Health Complex after she sustained an acid injury on Wednesday night.

Munni Begum, daughter of an expatriate Atique Hossain, was working in their kitchen when acid was thrown on her from outside the bamboo made wall.

She received burn wounds on her left arm and left leg.

The cause of the incident could not be ascertained immediately.

A case was filed against Helal Ahmed, a neighbour of the victim.

Family members of the victim alleged that the attack was a sequel to previous enmity between the two families.

Police raided Helal's house in the early hours of yesterday but failed to arrest him.

The matter is being investigated, they added.
