Gano Bishwabidyalay
Beat up officials

Bangladesh Chhatra League activists yesterday attempted to grab 11 acres land of the Gano Bishwabidyalay and looted its construction materials worth Tk 5 lakh, officials of the university alleged.

The BCL activists also beat up Mir Murtaza Ali, deputy registrar of the university, and its four other employees.

Murtaza filed the case with Ashulia police station against 12 BCL leaders including former joint general secretary of the central committee Mazhar Anam and 90 other unnamed activists.

Witnesses said armed BCL activists led by Mazhar broke down the boundary wall of the university around 7:00 am and hung a signboard, claiming ownership of the land.

Murtaza soon came to the spot with a number of employees of the university and resisted the BCL activists. At one stage, the BCL activists beat up Murtaza and four others, leaving them wounded.

Locals soon rushed to the spot and chased the invaders. The BCL activists retreated in fear of mob attack.

While retreating, the activists took away construction materials worth Tk 5 lakh kept there for extension work of the campus, said Engineer Mahmudur Rahman of the university.

He said police were informed but they came to the spot after the activists left the scene.
